Grupo Aeroméxico, Mexico’s leading commercial and cargo air transport company, offers over 500 daily flights domestically and internationally. Its main headquarters and operations center are in Mexico City, with secondary hubs in Guadalajara and Monterrey.
Grupo Aeroméxico had a clear objective: to become a data-driven organization.
The first stage of this initiative was the project to migrate their data warehouse (DWH) to Vertica. This platform is one of the leading information cores, as operational processes depend on it, reports for senior management are generated, and commercial campaigns are created and implemented. This made the migration effort critical for the Disruptive Initiative, which establishes batch and real-time data generation and analysis mechanisms, enhancing decision-making and discovery processes.
The main objectives that Grupo Aeroméxico sought to achieve with this migration initiative were:
I. A single source of truth.
II. Centralization of information and democratization of data consumption.
III. Scalability.
IV. Elasticity.
V. Global integration and future vision.
At XalDigital, as an experienced AWS partner, we considered all of Grupo Aeroméxico’s needs. We provided a comprehensive migration strategy focused on clear objectives and risk mitigation in four key aspects:
Understanding the necessary cloud implementation, XalDigital provided a plan for a refactoring migration and modernization, considering all functionality to be efficiently migrated to the cloud with a new technology stack that included AWS Redshift as the DWH. With AWS Snowball, historical data was transported to a raw bucket. AWS Glue jobs were used to complete the migration, with Vertica and AWS architectures coexisting throughout the migration effort.
XalDigital’s work plan consisted of a migration plan and a workflow methodology for rapid detection and reaction within an incremental progression of sprint deliverables, providing immediate visibility and feedback to the client in the development cycle.
The implemented architecture consisted of multiple processes and the deployment of various AWS services, components, and tools, leveraging AWS’s native capabilities and a phased, tested integration throughout the different migration stages.
Grupo Aeroméxico’s complete and successful migration of their DWH to AWS was accomplished, eliminating expenses in localization and sandbox for Vertica and optimizing functionality, processes, and costs in the cloud. This achieved cost reduction and data democratization across the entire company.
In this podcast, Aeroméxico’s Director of Data and Analytics reveals how they decided to carry out a project in collaboration with XalDigital and AWS, sharing the challenges, learnings, and critical points that marked each stage of this exciting process.
In Grupo Aeroméxico’s journey towards transformation, a wide range of AWS services were used, including:
Amazon Athena
Amazon VPN
Amazon VPC (Virtual Private Cloud)
Amazon Elastic MapReduce
Amazon Redshift
Amazon SNS (Simple Notification Service)
Amazon GuardDuty
AWS Glue
AWS Lambda y EventBridge
AWS Data Transfer
AWS S3 Standard (Amazon Simple Storage Service)
AWS CloudTrail
AWS Control Tower
AWS Step Functions
AWS SQS (Simple Queue Service)
AWS DynamoDB
AWS Secrets Manager
Grupo Aeroméxico’s successful migration to AWS is an example of how the right technology and strategies can drive transformation and enhance organizational decision-making.
