Aeroméxico stands out for its constant pursuit of innovation and efficiency. Faced with the challenge of a data analysis system that limited its responsiveness and strategic decision-making, the collaboration with AWS and XalDigital has been vital in adopting a DevOps methodology that completely transformed its approach to solution development.
Aeroméxico faced challenges with its data analysis system using DWH Vertica. The difficulty of integrating it with other systems and the lengthy data processing times compromised its operational agility and analytical capability. The way activities were managed was also a challenge, as priorities constantly changed. Additionally, code quality and reducing errors in change deployments were critical factors.
The strategy to overcome these obstacles is to adopt DevOps practices and leverage AWS’s advanced infrastructure and services. This approach allowed for data infrastructure deployment and operation automation, ensuring fast, reliable, and consistent deliveries.
The collaboration began with a detailed analysis of Aeroméxico’s needs and workflows, followed by implementing a strategic plan executed in sprints. Each phase of the project was designed to integrate continuous improvements, test and validate enhancements with users in the development environment, and perform efficient automatic deployments in both development and production environments, which are fundamental characteristics of the DevOps methodology.
The technological implementation was based on creating a cloud data environment, utilizing AWS services such as Amazon S3 for storage, AWS Glue for data preparation and loading, Amazon Redshift for analysis, and Amazon EMR for big data processing. Continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) were managed through AWS CodePipeline and AWS CodeBuild, facilitating infrastructure and application deployment automation.
All of this was made possible thanks to AWS services and XalDigital’s expertise. We leveraged the power of technologies such as:
AWS Control Tower
Amazon VPC
AWS Direct Connect
AWS Transit Gateway
Amazon S3
Amazon SNS
AWS Secrets Manager
AWS CodeBuild
AWS Transfer Family
AWS Snowball
AWS Glue
AWS Lake Formation
Amazon Redshift
Amazon Dynamo DB
Amazon KMS
AWS CodeCommit
Amazon Athena
Amazon EMR
AWS Lambda
Amazon SQS
Amazon EventBridge
Amazon Step Functions
AWS CodePipeline
AWS CloudFormation
These services came together like pieces of a puzzle to achieve the desired transformation.
The adoption of a DevOps strategy has allowed Aeroméxico to:
"The transformation of our data analysis system through DevOps practices has allowed us to modernize our data analytics ecosystem and add business capabilities based on technology with a speed of availability unthinkable in the on-premises world. The partnership with XalDigital and AWS has been fundamental in achieving these accomplishments."
- Pablo Olmos, Chief Data, Analytics and Artificial Intelligence Officer, Aeroméxico.
This success story demonstrates Aeroméxico’s commitment to innovation and continuous improvement and the potential of DevOps practices, in conjunction with AWS and XalDigital, to revolutionize data strategy in the airline industry.
